CONNECT SETUP AND CONNECTIVITY - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
Loop Back
Is it necessary for me to conduct testing with my trading partner before I begin transacting EDI through Covisint?
It is at the discretion of each trading partner as to the extent of testing, if any. Please contact your trading partners to understand their testing requirements.
Why hasn't anyone contacted me to perform a loop back test?
You will not be contacted by Covisint to perform this self-test. You can perform the loop back test at any time to validate your ability to send/receive messages with Covisint Connect. The following steps must be completed before a successful loop back can be performed:
  1. Trading Partner profile setup/created (identifier codes added)
  2. Connectivity channel requested and approved (FTP Mailbox, HTTPS Mailbox, etc.) Note: You should have created a separate username/password for accessing your mailbox. This is separate from your portal user ID.
  3. Connectivity channel network / firewall setup completed, if required (VPN tunnel, ANX Tunnel, firewall rules, etc.)
  4. Request and approve a trading partner relationship with one of your own codes (ie. same sender, receiver ID). Because you are requesting a relationship with your own code you have the authority to approve that relationship.
  5. Setup a default routing rule so all messages received can be routed to the connectivity channel previously created. Note: You are not able to set up routing rules until your channel has been enabled.
  6. Obtain a sample EDI document (any document you may already receive from a customer/supplier).
  7. Edit the EDI document so the sender and receiver IDs match the trading partner relationship previously established (i.e. same ID for both sender/receiver). Note: Covisint does not provide sample data.
  8. Submit or send the sample EDI document. A tracking ID should be returned.
  9. Access the Connect user interface and search for the tracking ID returned from your loop back test. If successful, the message should have been routed back to your connectivity channel.
What type of EDI document should I use for my loop back test?
A document type is a designation defined by a standards organization to inform trading partners what type of standard business document is represented. A transaction type identifies the technical nature of a transaction as processed by the Covisint system, such as a compound transaction, single transaction or a carbon copy transaction.
Is there anything special I need when connecting to Covisint from a home computer?
As long as your home computer meets the minimum system requirements for the application you wish to use, you will not need special equipment to connect to Covisint. The only system requirement for the portal is a modern web browser such as IE 6.0 or greater.
Why do I repeatedly get the login prompt when attempting to access my mailbox?
If you are using an HTTP Mailbox, and you have correctly entered your user ID and password, it is possible that you have not typed in the complete / accurate URL - check to make sure you have entered the complete URL in your browser.
Note: URLs are case-sensitive and must be typed exactly as they appear in the documentation.

Why do I keep getting a "page not found" error when attempting to access my mailbox?

Channels/Mailboxes
Why do I have to select a payment account for a connection channel?
Channels may be shared among several trading partner profiles in your organization. Thus, charges to set up and maintain channels must have a payment account that is separate from the trading partner profile payment account.
Why would I have more than one channel (connection method)?
While trading partners do not need more than one channel for sending and receiving messages, some trading partners may choose to implement different solutions for different divisions of the company. Covisint Connect allows trading partners to have and maintain multiple channels in order to accommodate these companies.
Why do I need to specify the direction of my connection? Don't I need both directions?
During the request for channels (connection methods), there are different options and configurations dependent on the direction (sending or receiving). The only exception to this is requesting a static Mailbox channel, for which the Covisint Connect team can set up both the sending and receiving channels at the same time.
Why would I add a maintenance window? Isn't Covisint Connect available 24/7?
Yes, the Covisint Connect system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The option to add a maintenance window is for your system, not ours. By identifying the potential date and timeframe of a maintenance window, the Covisint Connect system can be more proactive about alerts and notifications during a potential maintenance window by your system.
Why would I temporarily disable a channel?
If your system that supports this channel is temporarily unavailable, and you would like to prevent transmission of transactions to and/or from this system, then disabling the channel will achieve this.
What is the difference between a mailbox and a persistent channel?
Mailbox Channels support trading partners pushing transactions to and getting messages from the Covisint Connect system. Persistent Channels support an open connection between Covisint and the trading partner, allowing near real-time sending and/or receiving of transactions.
Why are the routing rules grouped by "defined attributes"?
Rules are pre-ordered based on how specific (the number of defined attributes) the rule is. For example, a rule is "IF the sender code is 123, AND IF the receiver code is ABC, AND IF the document type is EDIFACT DELFOR, THEN apply send to Channel X" - This has 3 defined attributes. Another rule might be "IF the sender code is 123, AND IF the document type is EDIFACT DELFOR, THEN send to Channel Y." - This has 2 defined attributes (the number of IFs). The system automatically implements rules with more defined attributes (if it didn't, some rules would never be implemented - in the examples, the first rule must be run before the second rule).
How will I know when my channel/mailbox has been activated?
You will receive an email stating so.
* If you requested a persistent channel, you will be contacted by a Covisint Connect Specialist.
* If you requested an FTP Mailbox, this email will inform you that your channel/mailbox is activated, and ready for you to test. In order to connect to Covisint via FTP-MAILBOX, ANX or VPN tunneling is required to maintain security. Please complete and return the tunnel application form, providing us your ANX or VPN information on the appropriate sheet.

Refer to the FTP Mailbox Connector Guide

* If you requested an HTTP(s) Mailbox, this email will inform you that your channel/mailbox is activated, and ready for you to test. When logging in to the SENDING mailbox and the RECEIVING mailbox, be sure to use the login credentials for the channel and not the profile. Note: URLs are case-sensitive and must be typed exactly as they appear in the documentation.

Why would I "reprioritize" a route?
Rules MUST be automatically ordered by the system in terms of how many defined attributes. For example, all the rules under 6 defined attributes will be run before any of the rules with 5 defined attributes. However, WITHIN the group of rules with the SAME NUMBER of attributes, the trading partner can decide which rules to run first. So, reprioritizing allows the trading partner to move around the order in which the rules are run WITHIN the SAME NUMBER of defined attributes.
When will my channel/mailbox login id and password be sent to me?
You created your login id and password when you requested the channel/mailbox. You created these in the fields "Account Name" and "Password".
Why does my channel/mailbox password expire every 12 months?
Keeping your information secure is of high priority. Passwords expire every 12 months to reduce the risk of passwords being compromised. You will be notified one month prior to the password expiring. The contacts for the Channel will be sent an email informing them the password is about to expire.
Can I change my channel/mailbox password?
Yes. However, this functionality is only available to Trading Partner Administrators. This is accomplished through the Connect user interface.
1. Click on the Channels tab.
2. Click view the channel details.
3. Click on the change password button.

Refer to the Covisint Connect Administrator Guide for detailed work instructions.
Can my channel name be changed?
No, the channel/mailbox name cannot be changed nor can the account name. You must create and set up a new channel using the new name, including establishing routing rules, etc. Then, delete the old channel (the channel with the wrong name).
Why am I required to use ANX, ENX or a VPN to transmit messages over FTP?
The FTP protocol is innately insecure. If files are sent over the public Internet through FTP, these files could be intercepted or sniffed. Therefore, Covisint supports these secure transport options for transmitting FTP.
Connectivity
How is connecting directly to Covisint different from connecting directly to a VAN?
The biggest difference is that most Value-Added Networks were originally designed for direct communication over telephone lines. Covisint, being newer, emphasizes the Internet or Internet-like private networks - such as Advanced Network Exchange (ANX). Most VANs now have Internet gateways, but many VANs still have thousands of customers who connect to them directly through an async or bisync modem. Covisint does not support dial-up connections.
Why doesn't Covisint support dial-up connections?
Two reasons: cost and reliability. All VANs and automakers are discouraging direct telephone connections because it is far more costly to maintain modem banks and telephone infrastructure than it is to maintain an up-to-date, high-capacity Internet gateway. In addition, Internet-like private networks, such as Advanced Network Exchange, provide both security and service guarantees, so the move from telephone connections to TCP/IP connections is desirable.
Can I still use a modem to send my data to Covisint?
Yes, you can still use an asynchronous modem to connect to your Covisint mailbox. The difference is that you use the modem to dial up to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and then you connect to Covisint from the Internet.
Why can't I use my bisync modem?
Basically, bisync modems do not support Internet access. They were designed to connect to a specific type of mainframe terminal, such as the IBM 3780, and use the binary synchronous (or bisync) protocol required by such devices. Since these devices are low capacity, they are considered obsolete. Today, even mainframes can connect using Internet-based protocols, such as TCP/IP, FTP and HTTP.
What is an interconnect?
The data pipeline that allows one Value-Added Network (VAN) to transmit and receive data with another VAN. An interconnect allows the Covisint Connect system to transmit and receive data with different VANs.
How is a direct connection different from an interconnect?
Trading partners with a direct connection to Covisint Connect have at least one connection method, or channel, set up with Covisint. They are sending and receiving transactions, as well as administering relationships and profile information, directly from Covisint Connect. Interconnects to non-direct connected trading partners are available from Covisint Connect so that the direct connected trading partners can continue to send and receive transactions to and from their trading partners. Trading partners transmitting through interconnects do not have a direct business relationship with Covisint Connect, and do not receive any services from Covisint.
If my trading partner uses a VAN interconnect, how does this affect me?
The Covisint Connect system supports transmission of documents through VAN interconnects. You can continue exchanging documents with this trading partner. However, there are benefits to having your trading partners switch to Covisint Connect. The latency from sending to receipt of documents will be greatly reduced when both trading partners are directly connected to Covisint.
